CAMH Foundation United Way Focus:
Chair in Mental Health Nursing

The Chair in Mental Health Nursing will be the first of its kind in Canada and will play a leadership role in research and care in evidence-based clinical practice for mental health nursing. In the treatment of mental disorders, which has both environmental and biological foundations, nursing care plays a major but understated role. Important nursing research has demonstated that early intervention for clients experiencing a first episode of an illness such as schizophrenia or depression can enhance a sense of self and improve one's long-term ability to cope with day-to-day stress.

By building relationships and partnerships with clients, nurses provide an important continuity of care which is the cornerstone of psychiatric services and is the visible link between research advances and actual day-to-day care. Nurses improve the quality of life of people with mental illness and facilitate recovery.

Every dollar donated to the CAMH Foundation towards the Chair in Mental Health Nursing will be matched by the University of Toronto.

About the Centre

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is the largest mental health and addictions facility in Canada, only one of four such facilities in that field to receive designation from the World Health Organization as a Centre of Excellence. Underlying all of the Centre's efforts are two principal tasks: advancing our understanding of mental health and addiction, and translating this knowledge into practical resources and tools that can be used in our own programs and in the broader community. This work is key to preventing problems, finding more effective treatments for often debilitating conditions, and improving the quality of life for people who are struggling with mental illness and addictions.

The Centre is recognized for its uniqueness and its ability to:

  • integrate biological, social and clinical research;
  • translate research done in a laboratory into practical treatment and tools;
  • provide a complete continuum of care in one setting;
  • integrate the treatment of alcohol, drug and mental disorders; and
  • be at the forefront of leading-edge research, making major advancements in the treatment of a number of diseases including schizophrenia and anorexia.

The Centre was created in 1998 through the successful merger of the Addiction Research Foundation, the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, the Donwood Institute and the Queen Street Mental Health Centre, and is a teaching hospital fully affliated with the University of Toronto. It operates central clinical and research facilities in Toronto, Ontario, as well as 12 community offices across the province. While the Centre's work focuses on the needs of Ontario communities, its impact extends across the country and internationally.
